Tips for Safer Driving

People who drive a car worry most about crime, but driving skills pose the biggest danger. When driving a car, it is very important to remember that thousands of people are injured on the road, both pedestrians and passengers. Many accidents can be prevented if drivers, both experienced and new, have adequate driving skills.

The best way to protect yourself as a driver and passengers is to drive safely and defensively while planning for the unexpected. By following a few 'rules' for driving you might be able to avoid accidents as well as fines.

Tips for Safe Driving:

  1. Your eyes should always be moving. Many drivers tend to stare at the road in front of them. When doing this, dangerous situations are noticed too late. Your eyes should be moving constantly up the road, down the road, to each side and behind you.
  2. Always have a way to get out of a bad situation. Try to keep your car in a place where your safety is not determined by other drivers. If danger begins to happen, you need a place to go to avoid a collision.
  3. Use Turn Signals. Always using a turn signal will lessen the likelihood of an accident. These signals get the attention of other drivers on the road. Turing on a signal at the same time as moving is not safe or legal. Using a turn signal is not only courteous to those around you, but also an important safety technique.
  4. Sit in the correct position. Arrange the seat so arms are just bent at elbows when holding the steering wheel at ten and two. Also, make sure you are holding the wheel tight enough so your hands do not slip off.
  5. Be ready for anything unexpected. Planning and anticipation are two features of a good driver. Try to anticipate what is going to happen ahead and prepare for it: green lights, hazards and pedestrians.
  6. Don't use electronics like cell phones and you should NEVER text while driving. Texting and driving kills!
